Brugsmansia

Brugmansia candida flora plena

Nothing quite prepares you for the beauty of the Brugmansia candida flora plena’s double white flowers.  They hang off the branch like delicate ballerinas dancing in the breeze.  A cheeky look under their skirts and you can see the ruffles of their petticoats, giving the double white flower a wonderful full look.  And as if this wasn’t enough, venture out of an evening and you will be rewarded with their sweet fragrance.  Who would be without it?

The plant is a small tree, with large, faintly furry, mid green leaves.  We cut ours back each year to keep them small but generally the frost cuts it back first, so we wait until Spring (and the end of the frosts) to trim the damaged limbs and that keeps it in check.

Brugmansia sanguinea

Extremely robust, Brugmansia sanguinea is a semi-evergreen, small tree boasting wonderfully colored, pendulous, narrow trumpet-shaped flowers, 15-25 cm. Unlike the other Brugmansia species adorned with pastel flowers, the blossoms display intense shining colors, green flower base, golden yellow side and brilliant red mouth with yellow veins.

We cut ours back each year to keep them in check so they grow more like a large shrub. In our Back Veranda Garden we have even made one into a Mop Top.

Brugmansia ‘Pink’

Brugmansia ‘Pink’ has huge, pendulous, trumpet-shaped, light pink flowers, 20-25 cm. Blooming from midsummer to Autumn, the blossoms actively open and close depending on the time of day. They contrast beautifully against the foliage of long, dark green leaves and exude a powerful fragrance in the evenings.

Brugmansia ‘Clementine’

Has wonderful deep double golden yellow flowers, which hang vertically. A rare form of Brugmansia this tree will bloom abundantly for many months. The flowers have a gorgeous scent with notes of orange and sweet almonds. We have it planted well protected in our Fat Cherub Garden.
