Philadelphus
Philadelphus, also known as ‘Mock Orange’ are large, mostly deciduous shrubs grown for their sweetly scented, white, sometimes with hints of pink, flowers. Philadelphus’ beautifully fragrant flowers come in both singles and doubles on attractive arching stems in late spring and early summer. They make a lovely specimen shrub or can be pruned into an informal hedge. They can become large and woody but you can easily cut them back. They are also pretty hardy, performing well in sun and part shade.
Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’
A compact, medium size of Philadelphus, it has simple, cup shaped flowers of pure white petals with a pink blush at the base and fluffy yellow stamens. The flowers have a delicate perfume that is orange blossom-like.
Oval, mid green leaves are arranged in opposites along the stems and turn yellow in autumn before dropping.
One of the better older forms.
Philadelphus mexicanus
A wonderful bright green evergreen form of Phildelphus. In late spring creamy white, single, fragrant flowers appear on short stems.
This is one of the more common forms, and grows well in a variety of conditions. It can grow big so you need to cut it back if you want to keep it controllable.
Philadelphus x ‘Silver Showers’ / ‘Silberregen’
Silver Showers is a rounded, multi stemmed deciduous shrub with a shapely form and gracefully arching branches with mid green leaves. During late spring and through early summer this dense, compact shrub is covered in a profusion of very fragrant single, cup shaped white flowers which are sweetly fragrant.
Philadelphus coronarius ‘Aurea’
A wonderful upright medium form of Philadelphus, it has the delightful fragrant flowers and gorgeous yellow foliage that greens as it ages. ‘Aurea’ is also super hardy. It will light up any garden bed, keeping in mind the sunnier the position, the more yellow the foliage.
Philadelphus x virginalis
This wonderful shrub has medium sized dark green leaves. In Spring, it grows upright sprays of 5cm round double white flowers with a lovely orange blossom fragrance.
