Garden Diary,  Plants,  Tales from the Garden

June 2022

Ah, June.  The first month of Winter.  Everything slows down and, as Jenny so succinctly puts it, “looks dead”.

It’s not really dead, she’s just being dramatic, as usual…

June was a slow month in the garden.  Sickness ran through the family causing chaos and short tempers.  The garden retaliated by growing weeds in a Spring-like manner.  We couldn’t remember seeing so many weeds.  Of course, when you feel unwell everything is much worse but it was looking pretty bad.  At least there was no watering to be done.  That would have sent Jenny over the edge, I’m pretty sure.

When there are lot’s of weeds it’s best to focus on sculptures and looking into the sky.

The garden is Jenny’s garden, and when she is not working in it, or planning something, or declaring how much she loves (or hates) something in it, it seems to lose something of its golden glow.  She goes down with sickness and the garden seems to go down in empathy.

And so, June crept on with minimum work in the garden.  Walks around the garden, lamenting its state, constantly ended with us shaking our heads and declaring that the only way forward was ground covers, lot’s of groundcovers.  And cramming in more plants.  Anything to supress the weeds.

And look! Things are already starting to shoot, despite the negative attitude of Jenny…

The saving light of this dark time was Bunnings Plant Sales.  Jenny has this down to a fine art.  She knows when Bunnings mark down their plants and she is there regardless of whether she feels like death or not.  And the first month of Winter is when they really try to get rid of everything – Salivas, Roses, Irises, annuals, she goes through it all with a fine tooth comb.  The plants have accumulated so, when sickness retreated and we headed into July, let’s just say we made up for lost time but that’s next month’s diary…
